Lasting Powers of Attorney
Though much in the press last year Lasting Powers of Attorney are the only safe way of ensuring that if you become mentally infirm or otherwise incapable of managing your own affairs a family member or other person you trust will look after things for you.
Regrettably as more and more people are living longer the number of people suffering from Alzheimer’s or Parkinsons or suffering disabling strokes is rising.
If you do not make a Lasting Power of Attorney and are unfortunate enough to suffer from Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, or suffer a stroke your affairs will be dealt with by the Court of Protection – a quasi government body with no knowledge of your personal wishes and little direct knowledge of your personal needs. The person appointed by them to be your deputy may not be the person you would choose to manage your financial affairs.
For the modest cost of a Lasting Power of Attorney you can guard against additional costs which follow from the Court of Protection being involved and also ensure that the person you choose deals with your property and affairs.
